What defines class? Not the Redskinettes. Last week the girls of Chantilly experienced a little more than they bargained for. What started out as a school gathering transformed into an uncomfortable striptease. Since Kindergarten we have had the SR&R Handbook shoved down our throats. The handbook stresses the importance of wearing appropriate clothing and states that students should not wear provocative clothing that will disturb the proper learning environment. With that said, the performance was not school appropriate or appreciated by a portion of the student body. While the boys were hardly disturbed by this appearance of the Redskinettes at our pep rally, the females were barely cheering (much like the cheerleaders themselves). The cheerleaders walked out in push-up bras and spankies. This may seem appropriate in a football stadium with people who made the decision to watch them. Our place at the pep rally seemed forced and biased. As a school rule, the pep rally was not optional and we were therefore forced to take part in a sexist performance. Is this the example the school is setting for young women who are insecure with their self image? We feel that if the Chippendales had been the chosen act for this pep rally, it would have been immediately rejected. Therefore, the Redskinettes did not set a good example for girls and performed in a sexually dehumanizing way and for some of us, it’s hard to believe that the school allowed this, let alone let the S.G.A. spend our school’s money on this classless performance.
