I was in class the other day and turned to ask my friend Andrew the time.

He started digging around in his pocket, and I expected to see him whip out his cell phone. It was a pretty risky move – we were surrounded by administrators. I looked over my shoulder, as I’m paranoid about teachers snatching cell phones away. I turn back around to see my friend holding a shiny, gold pocket watch.

He promptly answered “a quarter ‘til,” and went about his business.

With a new year comes a new change to the LS schedule. Unfortunately I don’t see this change for the better.

For each of the four years learning seminar has been established it has been accompanied by a re-design. LS started out as being one period for each of the two seminars, making a total of nine periods. The following year the two seminars where expanded into two periods shortening the transition time from class to class. And after that year, LS went back to being one period.

“The opposite of love is not hate; it’s indifference,” Elie Wiesel said. In a country based on democracy, passion and liberty, there is no room for apathy. Whether it seems like it or not, changes in our government affect every single person in this school; the 18-year-olds and 80-year-olds should all care about healthcare, because someday we will be searching for the lowest insurance costs. Someday, everything that is going through legislation right now will affect our individual liberties in the future.

Sun, surf, sand and celebrities are constantly found swarming through Miami. The sun, surf and sand can be found without effort, but the celebrities hold an invisible presence in the city; you know they are there, but they are tricky to find.
